Otsego County Master Gardener Plant Sale returns May 21st

Rain or shine, the Master Gardeners of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Otsego County will hold their annual plant sale on Saturday, May 21, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center, 123 Lake Street in Cooperstown.  Please note that the date of the sale is earlier this year, in past years it was traditionally held on the last weekend in May.

The selections at the Otsego Master Gardener Plant Sale were chosen with YOU in mind. We drew upon research from the Cornell Vegetable and Cornell Flower Trials, and the AAS Trials to grow a wide array of highly-rated plants that will be most successful in our area. Many are deer-resistant and/or disease-resistant, and many are varieties we have grown and loved ourselves. We grew the best for you!

A wide variety of vegetables, annual flowers, herbs, and perennials known to grow well in Otsego County will be featured at reasonable prices.  Choosing plant varieties not frequently found in local retail establishments, Master Gardener volunteers cultivated from seed heirloom and blight-resistant tomatoes, deer-resistant plants, and a few unusual varieties they love in their gardens.  All plants sold have been planted in sterile potting media. Unlike in past years, Master Gardeners will not be digging perennials from their gardens, in an effort to avoid the spread of jumping worms.  However, a limited selection of house plants from Master Gardeners’ own collections will be offered.

Cornell-trained Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions about planting, nurturing, and harvesting, and to assist in plant selections.  Customers are encouraged to bring boxes to carry home purchases.  Cash or checks are preferred, although credit cards are accepted.  For more information and continuing updates on plants offered, follow the webpage cceschoharie-otsego.org/OMG-Plant-Sale.  Gardeners may also leave a voicemail message at 607-547-2536 ext. 0 for questions.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the educational outreach of the Master Gardeners Volunteer Program of Otsego County and the Grow with CCE Campaign, an exciting comprehensive site redesign project to “Create a Place for Learning through Gardening.”  To learn more about this project, please visit cceschoharie-otsego.org/grow-with-cce

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – Two SUNY Cobleskill seniors, Alexandra Delvecchio and Anna Post, have been honored with 2022 Chancellor’s Awards for Student Excellence (CASE) as part of SUNY’s annual student recognition showcase. CASE is the highest honor awarded to SUNY students who have best demonstrated academic excellence and leadership.

Delvecchio, an Animal Science major who will be attending pre-veterinary school following graduation, has proven to be an innovative peer leader through her roles as Honors ambassador, campus engagement leader, resident assistant, and president of the Pre-Veterinary Club. She has worked with classmates on research projects, class learning aids, and project planning. This year, she worked tirelessly with another Honors student to construct a full-sized horse skeleton to be used as a teaching tool in Applied Animal Anatomy & Physiology and other courses to the benefit of students for years to come.

Delvecchio has been recognized before for her preeminence, receiving an Excellence in Student Leadership Awards in 2021 and 2022. She has also served as Vice President for the College’s chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success.

Anna Post, an Agricultural Business Management major, has been named to the Dean’s List each semester of her three years at SUNY Cobleskill, while balancing a full schedule of extracurricular and athletic pursuits. In recognition of her academic excellence, Anna was awarded an American FFA Degree, the organization’s highest degree to those who demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities and community involvement. She has been awarded by the College for Emerging Student Leadership and Excellence in Student Leadership and has been invited to join Delta Alpha Phi International Honor Society.

Post has also excelled on the field and the court, being named captain of both the women’s basketball and women’s soccer teams. She received North Atlantic Conference “Rookie of the Year” honors her first year as a college athlete, NAC Player of the Week during her junior campaign, and a spot on the NAC All-Academic Team for her competitiveness in the classroom. Alongside these commitments, Anna performs roles for the Student Government Association, Agricultural Business Club, Post-Secondary Agricultural Students Club, and the Dairy Cattle Club.

“The individual accomplishments of Alexandra and Anna in their time at SUNY Cobleskill are breathtaking in their scope, made even more so in the knowledge that they, along with their 2022 classmates, persevered through the disruption of a global pandemic. It’s this perseverance that makes one a truly successful leader,” said SUNY Cobleskill President Dr. Marion Terenzio. “In their demonstration of the well-rounded academic and professional qualities of which our students are capable, Alexandra and Anna reaffirm the readiness of this generation of students in meeting the challenges facing our society and our natural world.”

“Now more than ever, it is time to celebrate the accomplishments of our students who have helped one another get through this global pandemic and focus on getting the most out of their college education, and this year’s CASE winners are at the top of the class,” said SUNY Interim Chancellor Deborah F. Stanley. “It is my great honor to celebrate the fortitude, leadership, and achievements of this year’s winners, and I applaud their hard work and desire to do more for their campuses and fellow students. I, for one, can’t wait to see what they do next.”

"back & write" opens at OSMOS on May 21

Written By Editor on 5/9/22 | 5/9/22

Fiona Banner
Richard Bell
Kevin Claiborne
Emory Douglas
Leslie Hewitt

back & write is a group exhibition featuring work by Fiona Banner, Richard Bell, Kevin Claiborne, Emory Douglas and Leslie Hewitt. These relevant artists have been key contributors to the OSMOS community. Over the past 20 years, OSMOS has exhibited, published, and/or produced projects with each of them, and we are now honored to assemble and share their word-and-image-based works in our project space for art gatherings, publications, and exhibitions in the East Village storefront that was once a saloon frequented by Emma Goldman and other radicals.

Fiona Banner (born 1966 in Merseyside) often works under the moniker of The Vanity Press. She established the imprint in 1997, with her seminal book The Nam. Since then she has published many works, some in the form of books, some sculptural, some performance-based. In 2009 she issued herself an ISBN number and registered herself as a publication under her own name. Humor, conflict and language are at the core of her work. Fiona Banner first became known for her “wordscapes” – often heroically proportioned works that capture in her own words films, from war blockbusters to porn. She often works with the “nude”, transcribing the human form into category-defying prose. Sometimes she repurposes military aircraft to brutal, sensual, and comedic ends. Banner is the London Royal Academy’s Professor of Perspective.

Richard Bell (b. 1953) lives and works in Brisbane, Australia. He works across a variety of media including painting, installation, performance and video. One of Australia’s most significant artists, Bell’s work explores the complex artistic and political problems of Western, colonial and Indigenous art production. Bell grew out of a generation of Aboriginal activists and has remained committed to the politics of Aboriginal emancipation and self-determination. In partnership with Milani Gallery, OSMOS installed Bell’s Immigration Policy as part of a version of the artist’s Embassy in 2016 as a special project for LA Art Book Fair. This provisional version also included works by Emory Douglas and Fiona Banner, among others.

Kevin Claiborne (born 1989) is an American multidisciplinary conceptual artist whose work examines intersections of identity, social environment, and mental health within the Black American experience. Claiborne holds a B.S. in Mathematics from the historically Black college North Carolina Central University (2012), an M.S. in Higher Education from Syracuse University (2016), and an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University (2021). Claiborne is currently an adjunct professor for photography at Columbia University.

Emory Douglas (born 1943 in Grand Rapids). Douglas has been a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area since 1951. He attended City College San Francisco where he majored in commercial art. Douglas is well known as Revolutionary Artist and Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party, from 1967 until the early 1980s.

Leslie Hewitt (born 1977) is a New York City-based artist working between photography and sculpture. Hewitt graduated from The Cooper Union's School of Art in 2000, studied Africana and Cultural Studies at NYU from 2001-2003, and received an MFA in sculpture from Yale University in 2004. She is on the faculty at Cooper Union and Barnard College. Hewitt's approach revisits the still life genre from a post-minimalist perspective -- assemblages that reference the black literary and popular culture ephemera of her upbringing. Collaboration has been a central part of Hewitt’s art, including her ongoing work with cinematographer Bradford Young exploring the Menil Collection archive of civil rights-era photographs. That cinematic rumination on historicity and the relationship of the archive to memory, minimalism, lived experience and time, is exemplified in Hewitt’s Riffs on Real Time.

Family Farm Day Registration Deadline Extended to May 18th!

Preparations for Family Farm Day (FFD) are well underway! August 27, 2022, marks ten years of FFD, a popular agritourism event which celebrates high-quality local goods and foods, diverse educational experiences, and fun on the farm for the whole family. FFD began in 2013 as solely a Schoharie County event. Four years later Otsego County farmers joined in, followed by Delaware County farms in 2018, developing into the tri-county event we know today. Dozens of small farms will open their doors to the public, offering a glimpse behind the scenes into the daily life of a local farming operation. Visitors enjoy hands-on demonstrations and educational activities, tours and rides, samples and tastings of local foods and beverages, and of course, plenty of shopping! FFD is a wonderful way to showcase the never-ending variety of farm-fresh products that our region has to offer.

If you are a farm in Schoharie, Otsego, or Delaware Counties, Cornell Cooperative Extension cordially welcomes your participation. Take this opportunity to advertise your products to diverse markets, gain new customers, and educate your local community about farming. Farm registrations are being accepted through Friday, May 18, 2022. Information, including eligibility, registration, contacts, and agritourism resources are available online at www.FamilyFarmDay.org.

Looking for advertising opportunities? As one of the most important agritourism events in our region, communities near and far come to support our local farms and other area businesses. Sponsorship brings you visibility among an annual average of sixty participating farms from all three counties, as well as the hundreds of local families and thousands of tourists who visit on Family Farm Day. July 29–31, FSC presents the award-winning international flamenco and Spanish dance company Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana. Founded in 1983, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is one of America’s premier flamenco companies, touring internationally each year with far-reaching programs that entertain, educate and empower. The company will perform 3 shows, and talkbacks with the dancers will follow the performances.

FSC’s final production of the season is Bricktop, Legend of the Jazz Age, a new play by Cathey Sawyer. In this play with live music, Ada “Bricktop” Smith, who has been called “one of the most legendary and enduring figures of twentieth-century American cultural history” recounts through story and song her humble beginnings in Alderson, West Virginia, and her career as a cabaret performer and club owner that took her around the world, made her the companion of royalty, a favorite of writers and musicians, and the “Doyenne” of café society in Paris from 1921-1961.

FSC will comply with all current CDC and NY State Covid regulations, so show attendees must present an ID and proof of vaccination. Any updates to FSC Covid policy can be found on their website.
